Bernell Smith Jr., 67, of Bringhurst, passed away Saturday, January 10, 2015, at his home surrounded by his loving wife of 48 years, children, and grandchildren.
Bernell was born April 29, 1947, in Kokomo, to Bernell and Joan Hawk Smith Sr. On March 6, 1967, he married Phyllis Sommers; she survives.
In 1965, Bernell graduated from Kokomo High School. He then served in the United States Air Force for 20 years before his retirement. He then was a mail carrier for 22 years at the Lafayette Post Office. Bernell was a member of Bringhurst United Methodist Church. He enjoyed fishing, camping, NASCAR especially Jeff Gordon, watching Colts football, and spending time with his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Bernell is survived by his daughters, Tonia (Tom) Hall and Kimberly (Jerry) Hughes; one brother, Allen B. (Kris) Smith; three grandchildren, Courtney Hall, Andrew (Stephanie) Hughes, and Amber Hughes; his dog, Gracie; and several nieces and nephews.
Bernell is preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation for Bernell will be held on Wednesday, January 14, 2015, at Genda Funeral Home Reinke Chapel in Flora, from 11:00 a.m. to the start of the funeral service at 1:00 p.m. Pastor Larry DeVos will officiate. Burial will follow in Maple Lawn Cemetery in Flora, with military honors. Memorials in Bernellâs name may be made to Howard County Humane Society or Wounded Warriors.
