Betty Lou Swentzel

Betty Lou Swentzel, 96, of Frankfort, passed away on Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at Wesley Manor in Frankfort. She was born in Gary, on November 26, 1923 to Phillip Henry and Laura Elizabeth (Bell) Swentzel.

Betty Lou moved to Frankfort in 1988 and previously lived in East Chicago and Highland, IN. She graduated from Washington High School in East Chicago. Betty Lou obtained a bachelors and masters degrees from the University of Chicago in the musicology department. For many years, she taught in the public school system as well as being a music lecturer. Betty Lou was a member of St. Matthew United Methodist Church and was the organist and symphony director for many years. She was also a member of American Guild of Organist, Retired Teachers Association, Delta Kappa Gamma, and a former member of Tri Kappa and Hobart United Methodist Church where she had been the music director as well.

Surviving Betty Lou is a niece, Tamsen Marshall and nephew, David Knutson.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a sister, LaRue Belle Goodall and niece, Karen Knutson.

There will be special music and a tribute to honor Betty Lou, for her many years of service, on Sunday, December 6, 2020, during the morning worship at St. Matthew United Methodist Church in Frankfort. Genda Funeral Home, in Frankfort, is entrusted with the arrangements.
