Carroll J. Baker, 77, of Rossville, died at 2:20 a.m. Monday, Jan. 24, 2011, at his nephew's residence.
He was born Aug. 18, 1933, to the late Fred S. and Edith Wolf Baker in Trego County, Kan. He graduated from Quinter High School in Quinter, Kan., in 1952.
He worked in construction and as a millwright for 40 years with Kettlehunt, Staley (which later became Tate & Lyle), and St. Elizabeth Hospital. He also farmed in Clinton County for 60 years. He was a member of Carpenters Union Local 252, Grace Lutheran Church and Wildcat Creek Foundation. He was a was a conversationalist, environmentalist, and a world traveler; he visited Europe 19 times. He enjoyed walking in the woods, canoeing, world history, genealogy and was active in the fight to keep the Wildcat Creek in its current condition.
Surviving are four sisters, Edis Brovont (husband: George) of Delphi, Jane Bennett (husband: Curtis) of Monterey, Calif., Jean (husband: Dale) of Flora, North Manchester, and Geraldine Yoder (husband: Dean) of Delphi; and one brother, Dr. Eldon Baker (wife: Betty Rose) of Delphi.
Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 27, 2011, at Bodine Funeral Home, Rossville, Calling hours are from 9-11a.m. Thursday at Bodine's Rossville. Burial will take place at Gove Cemetery, Gove County Kansas
