Dick Norton Bishop

Dick Norton Bishop, Flora, Ind., died at IU Arnett Hospital, Lafayette, on Monday, Feb. 7, 2022.

Born Aug. 9, 1931, in Jay County, Ind., he was the son of Arthur Dick and Winifred Norton Bishop.  He grew up in Flora, Carroll County, Ind., where his father practiced law.  In 1951 he married Jane Thomson, and she survives.

Dick graduated from Flora High School in 1949, attended the College of William and Mary for one year, transferred to Earlham College, Richmond, Ind., and graduated in 1953.  In 1956 he graduated from Indiana University School of Law and moved back to Flora to join the law firm of Bishop & Bishop.  The firm became Bishop, Bishop & Bishop when his son, Dick Thomson Bishop, joined the practice in 1977.

In 1978 he was admitted to appear before the Supreme Court of the United States.

He was a director of the Bright National Bank of Flora (later First Financial Bank).

Dick always believed in helping others.  He served as an Elder in the Flora Presbyterian Church and was a Flora Rotarian for many years.  He received the Silver Beaver Award for his work with the Boy Scouts.

Dick enjoyed fishing and traveling.  He and Jane traveled to more than thirty-five countries.

Honoring Flora, he purchased the Flora Dime Store, refurbished it inside and out, and gave it to six churches for the Flora Thrift Shop.  The proceeds are divided among the churches and used only for helping others.  It has become a fine, inexpensive shopping place on Center Street in Flora and helps many people.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Dick Thomson Bishop, and his wife, Melissa, Flora; his son, Peter Daniel Bishop, and his wife, Stephanie, Cincinnati, Ohio; grandson, Arthur Dick Bishop and his wife, Mary, Santa Fe, New Mexico; grandson, James Thomson Bishop, Albuquerque, New Mexico; step-grandchildren, Noah and Victoria Lentz Hood, Lafayette, and Andrew Lentz of Cincinnati, Ohio; and great-grandchildren, Dinah Moon Bishop and Charles Waller Bishop, Santa Fe, New Mexico. Also surviving are brothers, Dan Bishop and Mike Bishop, and brother-in-law, Hassan Hussein.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Tom Bishop, and sister, Molly Bishop Hussein.

There will be no visitation.  A private family memorial will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Flora Depot Project, the Flora Thrift Shop, and to Doctors Without Borders, an organization that works all over the earth, helping others.  Dick’s life was saved years ago when he and Jane were traveling alone on a trip to Africa.  He became deathly ill with severe bleeding.  Doctors Without Borders made available care and 11 pints of blood at no cost and saved his life.

Genda Funeral Home, Flora, is assisting the family.
