Donald E. “Gene” Davis, 86, passed away on Tuesday, October 1, 2019, at St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis. He was born January 28, 1933, in Mechanicsburg, to Lester and Gertrude (Long) Davis. In 1954, he married Anna Louzena Sanders; she preceded him in death in June of 1988. Gene later married Shirley (Oppenlander) Hoyer in 1988; she preceded him in death.
After attending Frankfort High School, Gene served in the United States Marine Corp during the Korean War. Gene was the owner and operator of Davis Marathon on Main Street from its building in 1963 to his retirement in 1998. His memberships included Masonic Lodge where he was past master, Frankfort American Legion where he was past commander, Marine Corp. League, Moose, Eastern Star, Hope United Methodist Church; Gene also served on the Frankfort School Board for seven years and volunteered at Paul Phillippe Resource Center. He was an avid fisherman and fryer of many fish.
Surviving Gene are his children, Teresa Alsman, Brian Davis, and Patrick (Krista) Davis, all of Frankfort; step-son, Richard Hoyer, of Warrensburg, MO; brothers, Jack Davis, of Monticello, Marvin Davis, of Zionsville, and Fred (Carolyn) Davis, of Frankfort; two grandchildren, two step grandchildren, and one step great grandchild.
In addition to his wives, Gene is preceded in death by his daughter, Donna Burn; step-daughter and her husband, Jonna and Philip Lutrell; step-granddaughter, Beth; brothers, Gerald (Ida Beth) Davis and John (Geraldine) Davis; and sisters, Julia Hobson, Gladys Vergeri, and Evelyn Joan (Gordon) Dean.
Visitation will be held on Friday, October 4, 2019, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Genda Funeral Home in Frankfort. Funeral service honoring Gene will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 5, 2019, at the funeral home with Pastor Paul Whitaker officiating. Entombment will follow in the Clinton County Mausoleum at Green Lawn Cemetery with military honors. Memorials in Gene’s name may be made to Clinton County Marine Corp League.
