Donald Eugene Mohler, 93, of Winona Lake and formerly of Rossville and Lakeland, FL, passed away on Sunday, July 16, 2017, at Grace Village Health Care Facility. He was born June 28, 1924, near Rossville in Clinton County, to Clarence and Sarah Miller Mohler.
In 1942, Don graduated from Ervin Township High School near Kokomo. He attended Central-Normal College and University of Virginia Bank School. Don served in the United States Army during World War II in the Pacific Theatre with General McArthur, typing up the Generalâs directives for daily activities of the troops.
On November 10, 1946, he married Josephine Marley, together enjoying 63 years of marriage; she preceded him in death on June 2, 2010. Don and his loving companion, Norma Plank, exchanged vows on April 13, 2012; she survives.
Throughout his career, Don worked in banking and finance; he served for ten years in Kokomo, was vice president of Mercantile National Bank in Hammond for 17 years, and was majority stockholder of Burlington State Bank before retiring as Chairman of the Board in 1980.
Don was a devout Christian, member of First Presbyterian Church in Lakeland, and active in the Baptist church while in Indiana where he taught Sunday school and was Sunday school superintendent. He was also a member of Masonic Lodge #111 in Burlington. Don enjoyed basketball where he was also a referee and coach for both Junior High and High School students. In 1967, Don was introduced to golf and fell in love with the game; he worked in his retirement at Angel Hill Golf Course in Rossville for 15 years. Don loved to travel, and he and his wife covered most all of the United States.
In addition to his companion, Don is survived by his brother, Herbert (Marjorie) Mohler, of Marion; four grandchildren, Jessica (Kevin) Carruthers, Jacob (Darchele) Mohler, Andrea Mohler, and Dana Mohler; and six great-grandchildren, Joshua and Mary Carruthers, and Levi, Madison, Kevin, and Alexander Mohler.
In addition to his wife and parents, Don is preceded in death by his son, Steven Mohler; two brothers, Kenneth (Mary Jo) and Richard (Lucille) Mohler; and a great-granddaughter, Brooklyn Mohler.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Saturday, July 22, 2017, at Genda Funeral Home Rossville Chapel from 10:00 a.m. to the start of the memorial service at 11:00 a.m. Melvin Mohler and Herbert Mohler will lead the services. Inurnment will follow in Maple Lawn Cemetery in Flora. Memorials in Donâs honor may be made to Florida Presbyterian Church in Lakeland or to the donorâs charity of choice.
