Dorothy E. Reed

Dorothy Edith (Arion) Reed, 94, of Frankfort, passed away into the loving arms of her Savior on January 23, 2019.  She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.  Dorothy was born on October 27, 1924, in Clinton County, to William Henry and Bessie Caroline (Houk) Arion.  On March 27, 1948, she married Bobby Lemuel Reed and spent the later years of his life totally devoted to his care and well-being as he suffered from Alzheimer’s.  He passed away on November 13, 2008.

Mrs. Reed’s main focus was her family and her home, but she did work outside the home on occasion at American Laundry, Spencer’s Dime Store, Murphy’s Dime Store, Barr’s Dime Store, Del Monte and W. T. Grant’s Department Store.  She retired in the mid-seventies to care for her terminally ill son, Philip.  She loved to work in her gardens and flower beds, an activity she continued up into her 90’s, and also loved to do plastic-canvas needlepoint projects.  She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Frankfort, for more than 79 years and a member of the 70 & 2 Class.  Dorothy also delivered for Meals on Wheels with her husband for many years.

Surviving Mrs. Reed are two daughters, Judy Cox and Norma (Allen) Melson, both of Frankfort; four grandchildren, Lori Shaff Ostler (Tom Chandler), Lisa Shaff (Josh Gross), Jennifer (Joshua) Edens and Anthony (Caitlin) Melson; and six great grandchildren, Ashley Shaff, Stephanie, Sarah and James Ostler, and Ethan and Abigail Edens.

In addition to her loving husband, Mrs. Reed is preceded in death by her parents, two sons, Michael Allan (1948) and Philip Lemuel (1979); two brothers, Edward Arion and Donald Arion; and two sisters, Effie Crum and Levenia Street.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 27, 2019, at Genda Funeral Home in Frankfort, from 12:00 p.m. to the start of the funeral service at 2:00 p.m.  Pastor Chuck Williams will officiate.  Burial will follow in Bunnell Cemetery with her husband and two sons.  Memorials in Mrs. Reed’s name may be made to Bobby L. and Dorothy E. Reed Memorial Library at First Baptist Church.  Online condolences may be directed to www.gendafuneralhome.com.
