Eleanor A. Raff Carter, 93, of Rossville, passed away Sunday, June 1, 2014, at Milner Community Healthcare in Rossville.
She was born January 16, 1921, in Richmond, Cal., the daughter of Charles and Ella C. Van Valer Raff. Upon receiving her Bachelor of Science degree in dietetics from Stanford, she enlisted as a dietician in the Army in 1943. Throughout her career, she worked in military hospitals in California and in Burma during WWII. She had achieved the rank of First Lieutenant at her discharge in 1946. She met her future husband, Jack Carter, an enlisted man, in California. They married in 1947 and moved to Jackâs hometown of Flora.
Eleanor made an impression on the community and was asked to become the second director of the Flora Library in 1947. She left the position in 1948 prior to the birth of her first child, Gary. She later had a daughter, Judy. The family returned to California where Eleanor again worked as a dietician and then returned to the Flora and Rossville areas in 1964. She was a member of First Christian Church in Flora. Everyone who knew Eleanor admired her unwavering determination to persevere.
Surviving Eleanor are her children, Gary (Susan) Carter and Judy (Ted) Davis; sister, Peggy Hochstetler; five grandchildren, Martie, Michelle, John, Sean and Stacy; one great grandchild, Devin; and several nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, and one sister, Agnes Raff.
