George F. Hammel, 87, of Monticello, passed away on Sunday, January 1, 2017, at his home.
He was born January 30, 1929, in Mulberry, to Lester D. and Mary Lou Swihart Hammel. On January 31, 1953, he married Dixie Sheets; she survives.
George attended Mulberry Schools before serving in the United States Army as a Corporal during the Korean War. George and his family moved from Mulberry to Carroll County in 1975. He worked as a self-employed contractor, Hammel Contracting, while working for Heavilon Contractors. He retired from the Carroll County Highway Department in 1992.
George served on the Madison Township Volunteer Fire Department and was past Mulberry Town Marshall and Clinton County Special Deputy. He was a life member of the Wildcat Conservation Club and member of the Monticello American Legion and Eagles Lodge. George was also a member of the Mulberry Square Dance Club and later Four Seasonâs Squares Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, collecting western hats and caps, and spending time with his four-legged grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, George is survived by one son, Tony R. Hammel, of Lebanon; daughters, Teresa Black, of Lebanon, and Dinah Brown, of Rossville; brother, Ray âSlimâ Hammel, of Mulberry; cousin, Jim Hammel; five grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
George is preceded in death by his parents, one son, George David Hammel; one grandson, Jason Burke; one brother, Paul; and two sisters, Joyce and Ruth.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 5, 2017, at Genda Funeral Home Mulberry Chapel from 4:00 â 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 6, 2017, at the funeral home.
