George Russell Flora, 71, of Frankfort, died on December 1, 2015, at 12:01 a.m. at St. Vincent Seton Specialty Hospital, after almost a 15-year battle with lymphoma.
He was born December 30, 1943, in Frankfort. His parents were Russell F. and Ida M. (Walker) Flora. He married Peggy Jo Tipmore on October 24, 1964 in Rossville, IN; she survives.
George lived in the Moran area all of his life. He graduated from Owen Twp. Elementary School in 1957, Rossville High School in 1961, and Purdue University in 1968.
He was a deacon and elder in the Rossville Presbyterian Church where he also taught Sunday school for a number of years. He later attended Covenant Church in West Lafayette.
George was instrumental in establishing the Volunteer Ambulance Service (V.A.S.) in Rossville, which was one of the first such services in the state of Indiana. He served as its first president. He was recognized by Governor Otis Bowen, M.D. for his leadership in establishing a model for transitioning emergency medical service in rural areas to an era where service was provided by trained emergency medical technicians using a modern ambulance. He also received the Purdue Alumni Associationâs Outstanding Alumni Award in 1974 for his community service. He was a charter appointee to the Clinton County Emergency Medical Services Council.
George worked at Chrysler Corporation in Kokomo from 1964 to 1971. He retired in 2002 as Corporate Champion - Knowledge Management from Delphi Delco Electronics Systems in Kokomo after working there more than 30 years.
His hobbies included woodworking, photography, and genealogy. George loved spending time with his grandchildren, traveling all over the world with his loving wife and daughter, and enjoyed his John Deere tractors and memorabilia.
Surviving with his wife are a daughter, Dawn McMains (husband: Kyle), three granddaughters, Kylee McMains, Madeline McMains, and Makayla McMains, one grandson, Micah McMains, all of rural Frankfort; and one sister, Linda Lindsey of Indianapolis. His parents, a brother, Dr. Frederick W. Flora, M.D., and a sister, Phyllis Patricia, preceded Mr. Flora in death.
His family would like to thank Dr. Wael Harb and his entire staff for the wonderful, compassionate care provided to George throughout his illness.
Visitation will be held on Monday, December 7, 2015, at Genda Funeral Home Rossville Chapel from 3:00 -7:00 p.m. A Celebration of Life service will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, December 8, 2015, at the funeral home with Pastor Rob Eyman officiating.
