Gilbert Jones, 90, Mulberry, died at 6:32 a.m. Monday, Sept. 12, 2011, at IU Health Arnett Hospital. He was born Nov. 8, 1920, in Tipton County, to A. Ernest and Maude (Wright) Jones. He married Dorothy M. (Wiley) Jones on May 3, 1942, and she preceded him in death on April 27, 2010.
He graduated from Prairie High School in Tipton County, where he was an athlete, participating in basketball, baseball and boxing. He received a degree from John Herron Art Institute and also from Butler University in education. He also served in World War II in the Army Air Corps.
He had lived in Indianapolis from 1948 to 1955, then moved to Rossville in 1955 and to Mulberry in 1975. He was a free lance commercial artist; a farmer, retiring at the age of 76; and previously
worked for Planning Commission of Tippecanoe County and Purdue University. He loved working on genealogy and has written three books regarding his family history.
He is survived by one daughter, Marsha (Robert) Zoll, Green Bay, Wis.; one son, Allan G. (Stella) Jones, Frankfort; four sisters, Bonnie Lineback, Hartford City, Ruth Mraz, Tipton, Rosemary Uitts Tidler, Plainfield, and Frances Hawkins, Nebraska; five grandchildren, Kimberly Speer, Christopher Jones, Lance Jones, Brian Zoll and Matthew Zoll; and five great-grandchildren, Zachary, Brandon, Kaleigh, Alexander and Jacob.
He was preceded in death by his wife; two sisters, Inez Sharp and Irene Van Devender; and one brother, Austin Jones.
Services are 2 p.m. Saturday at Bodine Funeral Home, Rossville, with the Rev. Rick Jones officiating. Burial will be in Fair Haven Cemetery. Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
