H. LeRoy Moore, 93, of Lafayette, died at his home on Tuesday, November 1. Born October 20, 1918, in Stockwell, he was the son of the late Harry and Eva Moore. After graduation from Stockwell High School in 1937, LeRoy served in the Air Force Air Corps. In 1942, he married Martha L. Carr, and they have enjoyed 69 years of marriage.
Mr. Moore was a life resident of Lafayette, a serving elder of Immanuel United Church of Christ, a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Experimental Aircraft Association, and a lifetime member of the National Rifleman Association. He and his wife shared a deep passion of flying their own aircraft to many destinations in the states. LeRoy also enjoyed motorcycling, woodworking, travel, and especially spending time with his family. He initiated and fought tirelessly for years to save the Wildcat Valley that we enjoy today from being turned into a commercial reservoir. LeRoy retired from Kettelhut Construction with over 30 years as a construction superintendent. He and his wife then operated their own construction company for 20 years.
Surviving with his wife Martha are a son, David Moore of Delray Beach, Florida; a son, Gregory Moore of Lafayette; a daughter, Lucille Halsmer of Lafayette; a daughter, Lucinda Cook (husband: John) of Colfax; a daughter, Luciene Rathwell of Wayne, Illinois.
Also 10 grandchildren: Heather Moore, Chris Moore, Nathanael Halsmer, Thaddaeus (wife: Kim) Halsmer, Elisabeth Halsmer, Emily (husband: Travis) Daugherty, Philip Halsmer, Eleasah Halsmer, Morgan Cook, and Rylan Rathwell. LeRoy is preceded in death by his parents, a brother, two sisters, and a grandson, Nathanael Halsmer.
A family burial will be held on Wednesday. Friends may visit at a memorial celebration at Fairview Community Center, County Road 200 North, Lafayette, on Thursday, November 3, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. At 6:30 p.m., Reverend Jacob Hoffman will lead a time of honoring and remembrance.
