Harley Dupler

Harley H. Dupler, 76, of Frankfort, passed away on April 10, 2018, at the Indiana Veterans’ Home in West Lafayette.

He was born March 21, 1942, to Harley H. and Laura (Wright) Dupler and raised in Frankfort where he was active in band, wrestling, and tennis.  He was especially active in Boy Scouts, where he reached the rank of Eagle Scout.  He was an avid camper and naturalist and spent his summers at scout camp.   Later in life he served as a scout master.

He was a graduate of Frankfort Senior High School Class of 1960.  In his senior year of high school he was voted class president and was a member of the National Honor Society.  His activities included golf, pool, card games such as bridge and gin rummy and chess – at which he was an expert.

After high school he was awarded a scholarship to the Air Force Academy.  He graduated in 1964 with a degree in electrical engineering and received a commission to the Marine Corps, following in his father’s footsteps.  Throughout his life he continued to be involved in the Clinton County Marine Corps League.  Harley served four tours in Vietnam.  While there he was a Company Commander, rose to the rank of Captain, and was awarded the Purple Heart.

He returned home and secured work at Baldwin County REMC in Alabama as an engineer responsible for managing the operation, maintenance, and purchasing for their facilities.  He later returned to Frankfort as a maintenance director at Frankfort and Home Hospitals, from which he retired.  He also took correspondence courses from Troy State University and earned masters’ degrees in Business Administration and Education.

Harley is survived by a son, Derek (Kathleen) Dupler of Arlington, IN and daughter, Melinda (Greg) of Lafayette; brothers, Lee Dupler, M.D. of Frankfort and Murphy Dupler, D.D.S. of Michigan; and seven grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, Harley is preceded in death by brother, Pete; and his former wife, Judith Neiman Dupler.

Visitation will be Saturday, April 14, from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at Genda Funeral Home.  Funeral service will begin at 1:00 p.m. and burial at Green Lawn Cemetery with military honors immediately following.  In keeping with Harley’s naturalistic background, he requests potted plants in lieu of cut flowers be given in remembrance, or donations to the local VFW, Boys and Girls Club, or charity of choice.  Online condolences may be directed to www.gendafuneralhome.com.
