James K. McIntosh, 86, a life-long Frankfort resident, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 20, 2019, at Carmel St. Vincent Hospital. He was born December 13, 1932, in Frankfort, to Winder Rufus “W.R.” and Bertha L. (Harrison) McIntosh. On August 3, 1953, he married Joan Sloan; she survives in Frankfort.
After graduating from Frankfort High School in 1951, Jim served in the United States Army in Greenland where he helped build the Thule Air Base during the Korean Conflict from 1953 to 1955 and then in the Army Reserves until 1962. Jim worked for ten years at Nickel Plate Railroad in the Roundhouse. After 28 years of service, Jim retired from Frankfort Fire Department as a Captain in 1989 where he was also an EMT. He was one of the first in the “new firehouse” and being trained on the new snorkel truck. As most firefighters do, Jim also worked part-time at Betty Lou Flower Shop and the Frankfort Moose.
Jim was a life-long member of the Frankfort Eagles, Moose, Elks, and Frankfort Country Club and member of the Frankfort American Legion. He was an avid golfer, wintering in Sebring, Fla., to be able to play all year round. Jim also taught his grandchildren the love of the game and had customized clubs for others. He had a passion for animals and loved to go to the zoo, but Jim’s true pride and joy was his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Jim is survived by his daughters, Marcia (Tom) Dickerson, of Frankfort, and Lisa (Keith) Smith, of Westfield; sister, Rose Austin, of Frankfort, grandchildren, Renee (Josh) Impson, Rebekah Dickerson, Andrew (Tracy) Smith, Alex Smith, and Caitlin (Preston) Stacy; great grandchildren, Danielle, Lucien, London, Jackson, Allison, Madeline, and Laethan; and nieces and nephews, Steve McIntosh, Mike Kelley, Tim Kelley, Jay McIntosh, Melissa Brown, Eric Austin, and Janet Miranda.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Tom, Jerry, and Robert; and sisters, Helen Branagin and Betty Kelley.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 23, 2019, at Genda Funeral Home in Frankfort, from 1:00 p.m. to the start of the funeral service at 3:00 p.m. Pastor Phil Lake will officiate. Burial will follow in Green Lawn Cemetery with military graveside honors by the Clinton County Honor Guard. Memorials in Jim’s name may be made to Clinton County Humane Society.
