Joanna Margaret (Buck) Sizmur, 81, of West Lafayette passed away peacefully on Saturday, March 19, 2016 in Mulberry, Indiana.
Joan (Joanna) was born in London on April 13, 1934 to George and Sarah Buck. At the age of five she was evacuated during the Blitz in WWII to the village of Kirtlington, in Oxfordshire. She was the eldest of seven children, which included six younger brothers, whom she adored.
Joanna travelled extensively in her twenties. A trip around the world included living in Australia for two years. Finally, she settled in the United States with her husband, Roy.
She later single-handedly raised four beautiful children while earning a Bachelor of Arts degree with highest distinction from Purdue University. Subsequently, she earned a Master of Science from the University of Illinois and a Master of Arts from Purdue. A well-loved educator, she taught English at Purdue for many years, particularly enjoying her international students.
She had an indomitable spirit that inspired those around her to excel and push against all boundaries and the difficult challenges of life. Joanna touched many peopleâs lives and her legacy of kindness and encouragement will continue to flower for a very long time.
Joanna was a kind, compassionate person with a razor-sharp intellect and quick wit, an avid reader, an excellent writer, and a world traveler. She always enjoyed healthy debates about politics, religion, and human rights. She was an advocate for world peace and a champion for people who were down on their luck. She never turned away from those in need and was well known for helping strangers who just needed a warm bed and a hot meal.
Joanna is survived by her children, Deirdre Moore of Zionsville, David Sizmur of Washington, D.C., Jill Van Allen-Seedorf of Greenville, Wisconsin, and Jane Moore of Lafayette. She has eight grandchildren â Alex, Nathan, Ryan, Connor, Rhianna, Aidan, Adam, and Sophie â whom she loved dearly.
A private gathering for immediate family will be held at a future time. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution to Doctors Without Borders or any other humanitarian charity.
