Joe E. Hinesley, 93, a long-time Crawfordsville resident, passed away on Friday, August 18, 2017, at Wesley Manor Retirement Community in Frankfort.
He was born April 6, 1924, in Oakley, to the late Everett V. âBeanerâ and Lottie May Gochenour Hinesley. In 1947, Joe married Ramona H. Hartley; she survives.
In 1942, Joe graduated from Rossville High School and then served in the United States Army during World War II. He was held as a POW in Germany before returning home. Joe owned and operated Hinesleyâs Jewelry from 1960 to his retirement in 2000, when it became Creek Jewelers. He was a licensed watchmaker in the State of Indiana, and member of the Watchmakerâs Association of Indiana.
Joe was a very community minded person and leader in the Crawfordsville area for many years. He was a member of First Methodist Church, Elks Lodge, Masonic Lodge and Shrine, V.F.W. where he was also a volunteer driver, American Legion Brian Cox Post, and Lions Club where he was also past president. Joe was also on the Board of Directors for Crawfordsville Electric Light & Power, and served as board member and past president of Crawfordsville Chamber of Commerce, two-term Crawfordsville City Councilman, and Republican Precinct Committeeman.
In addition to his wife, Joe is survived by his daughters, Sheila (Richard) Davis, of Evanston, IL, and Susan Hinesley, of Kokomo; two brothers, Bob (Linda) Hinesley and Don (Connie) Hinesley, both of Rossville; two granddaughters, Samantha Petry and Abbigail Petry Lane (Evan); and six nieces and nephews.
A gathering of family and friends will be held on Sunday, October 8, 2017, at Genda Funeral Home Rossville Chapel from 2:00 p.m. to the start of the memorial service at 4:00 p.m. Chaplain Ken Rushing will officiate. Online condolences may be directed to www.gendafuneralhome.com.
