John F. Layton, 94, of rural Frankfort, passed away Saturday, June 6, 2015, at his home.
He was born December 31, 1920, in Boone County near Reagan, to Donald D. and Ida Merrill Layton Sr. On June 1, 1941, he married Geneva R. Lucas near Mulberry; she survives.
John was a 1941 graduate of Mulberry High School. During World War II, John served in the United States Navy at New Hebrides and Bougainville. He farmed for many years. He raised and kept quarter horses and ponies; together with his sons, they enjoyed showing them in western Indiana and eastern Illinois. John also worked for the United States Postal Service in Frankfort, for 37 years of which he was a rural letter carrier for 12 years before retiring in 1978. John attended Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church and was a member of Frankfort American Legion Post 12, Clinton Masonic Lodge #54, and National Association of Federal Employees (NARFE).
In addition to his wife, John is survived by two sons, James F. (Gloria Jean) Layton and Kenneth W. Layton, both of rural Frankfort; brother, Billy Joe Layton of Mulberry; three sisters, Phyllis (Robert) Douglass of rural Frankfort, and Suzie Good of Mulberry; brother-in-law, Charlie Schiery of Mulberry; five grandchildren, Jason F. Layton, Gary Wayne Layton, Ryan Lee Layton, Monica Sharky, and Pamela Jean Layton; and four great grandchildren, Maya, Piper, Colton, and Adaya.
He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Jessie Wayne Layton and Donald D. Layton Jr.; and one sister, Irma Schiery.
Visitation will be held at Genda Funeral Home Rossville Chapel on Tuesday, June 9, 2015, from 4:00 â 7:00 p.m. Funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 10, 2015, at the funeral home with Pastor Donna Enersen officiating. Burial will follow in Fair Haven Cemetery in Mulberry. Memorials in Johnâs name may be made to Clinton County Cancer or the American Heart Association.
