Leon Gray

Leon Gray, 93, of Rossville, died on Saturday, January 5, 2013, at Milner Community Health Care in Rossville.

He was born December 5, 1919, in Clinton County, the son of Ora Gail and Tola Retha Sheets Gray.

On October 8, 1944, he married the former Thelma Lucille Wainscott; she survives.

Leon graduated from Rossville High School in 1937.  He farmed from 1937 until he enlisted in the United States Navy as a Cadet on September 12, 1942.  He graduated from Pensacola, Fla. as a Naval Aviator on October 3, 1944 and was assigned to the carrier-based torpedo bombers at the Miami Naval Air Station.  He ended his naval career on October 12, 1945 and returned to Indiana to farm.

In addition to farming, Leon has been a member of several organizations; he was a member for eight years of the Owen Township Advisory Board and Owen Township Trustee, member of Rossville School Board, six years member of Milner Retirement Home Board, member of RAT (Rossville Area Transit) Van Board for two terms, 50 year member of Beard Masonic Lodge #641, past charter member of Rossville Lions Club, member of Rossville Presbyterian Church where he was ruling elder for 24 years, and previously attended Oakland Christian Church.  In 2003, he retired after 17 years of service with Bodine Funeral Home.

In addition to his wife, Leon is survived by two children, Christine Gray Puckett (husband, Robert) and Gary Wayne Gray (wife, Vickie P.); five granddaughters, Carol Dishon (husband, Gunnar), Nicole Weaver (husband, Matthew), Kelley Huizar (husband, Joel), Caren Crum (husband, Caleb), and Christy Mendoza (husband, Salvador); one brother, Gilbert R. Gray; sister, Bonnie J. Carmen; sister-in-law, Kate Gray; and 11 great grandchildren plus the anticipated arrival of a new great grandchild.

He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Robert Gray; one sister, Doris Skiles; and one daughter-in-law, Victoria Gray.

A memorial service will be held in Leon’s memory on Saturday, January 12, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at Rossville First Presbyterian Church with Pastor John Everett officiating.  Following the service, the family invites everyone to join for a celebration of Leon’s life and a fellowship meal.  A private family entombment will be held Green Lawn Mausoleum in Frankfort.

Memorials in Leon’s name may be made to FFA Scholarships for Clinton Central High School and Rossville High School or the American Kidney Fund.
