Marie W. Powell

Marie W. Powell, 87, of Frankfort, passed away Wednesday, October 1, 2014, at Wesley Manor Retirement Community in Frankfort.

She was born February 22, 1927, in Eureka Springs, AR, the daughter of Floyd Perrin and Elgie Schrader Sperry.  On November 5, 1944, she married Rev. E. Vaughn Powell in Hot Springs, AR; he preceded her in death May 27, 2008.

Marie graduated from Eureka Springs High School in 1944 and attended Leo N. Levi School of Nursing in Hot Springs, AR.  After her husband’s discharge from the military, the couple moved to Indianapolis, living there for 10 years before moving to Whitestown.  Beginning in 1959, Vaughn and Marie served United Methodist churches in Kirklin, Waugh, Mulberry, Otterbein, Churubusco, and LaGrange. They returned to Churubusco in retirement.  Marie was a homemaker and an active member of many community organizations.  She served as a Certified Lay Speaker and held numerous offices on the local, district, and conference levels of the United Methodist Women.  Marie accompanied her husband on several mission trips to
Africa, Puerto Rico, and Texas.

Surviving Marie are her children, Linda (Gene) Marshall of Mulberry, IN.; Jean (Steve) Wiyatt of Effingham, IL; Stephanie (Robert) Drake of Monument, CO; Kimberly Powell of Churubusco, IN; and Kris (Jim) Fry of Churubusco, IN; ten grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Marie is preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Floyd Sperry; and half-sister, Bonnie Pierce.

Visitation for Marie will be held on Monday, October 6, 2014, at Amanda Reid Memorial Chapel at Wesley Manor in Frankfort, from 10:00 a.m. to the start of the service.  Funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. with Chaplain Barbara Kinsler officiating.  Graveside services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Monday, in Riverview Cemetery in rural Churubusco.  Memorials in Marie’s name may be made to Wesley Manor Employee Christmas Fund.  Arrangements are entrusted to Genda Funeral Home in Frankfort.  Online condolences may be directed to www.gendafuneralhome.com.
