MARTHA LUCILLE CARR MOORE, 88, of Lafayette, died at her home on Tuesday, April 3, 2012. Born July 6, 1923, in rural Lafayette, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Stella Carr. After graduation from Lafayette Jefferson High School in 1941, Martha worked at Purdue National Bank in West Lafayette. In 1942, she married H. LeRoy Moore, and they enjoyed 69 years of marriage.
Martha was a life resident of Lafayette, a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ, a member of the Experimental Aircraft Association, and the Ninety-Nines Women's Fraternal Order of Aviation. She received her private pilot's license in 1974. Martha also enjoyed belonging to a close-knit group of local women, Sew & Blow, for the past 70 years. She and her husband shared a deep passion of flying their own aircraft to many destinations in the states. Martha also loved swimming, gardening, spring mushrooming, sewing & fine needlework, looming, and painting, She and her husband fought tirelessly for years to save the Wildcat Valley that we enjoy today from being turned into a commercial reservoir. Martha and LeRoy operated their own construction company for 20 years.
Surviving are a son, David Moore of Delray Beach, Florida; a son, Gregory Moore of Lafayette; a daughter, Lucille Halsmer of Lafayette; a daughter, Lucinda Cook (husband: John) of Colfax; a daughter, Luciene Rathwell of Wayne, Illinois.
Also 10 grandchildren: Heather Moore, Chris Moore, Nathanael Halsmer, Thaddaeus (wife Kim) Halsmer, Elisabeth Halsmer, Emily (husband Travis) Daugherty, Philip Halsmer, Eleasah Halsmer, Morgan Cook, and Rylan Rathwell. Also surviving is a younger brother, Lee Carr. Martha is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and a grandson, Nathanael Halsmer. Her husband, LeRoy, just passed away November 1, 2011.
A Private family burial took place Wednesday April 4th at Fair Haven Cemetery.
