Mary Madeline (Grube) Schubert of Frankfort, IN, passed away Saturday March 10, 2012. She was born in Butler, IN, on September 22, 1914. She graduated from Butler High School at 16, attended Albion College, where she was elected to the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority and graduated from Manchester College in 1935, having majored in mathematics and history, and minored in French and physical education. She taught at the Ashley (IN) School after graduation. Madeline married Walter Schubert in 1936, in Ripley, NY, after which they lived in Hicksville, OH, where Walter was a coach and school administrator. In 1942-43, Madeline and Walter constituted half of the Kelleyâs Island (OH) School System on Lake Erie, after which they lived in Pemberville, OH, where Walter was Superintendent of Schools. After moving to Butler, IN, in 1948, Madeline stayed at home to raise their son, William, in his formative years. She resumed her teaching career at Butler High School from 1953 to 1968, where she sponsored the National Honor Society, and was frequently selected âFavorite Teacherâ by senior classes, for her teaching of math and social studies. Elected to Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary society for women in education, Madeline was a life-long member of the Methodist Church and Eastern Star. She completed graduate studies at Ball State University and Indiana University. Madeline continued her teaching career as a math teacher at Angola High School and Middle School, until her retirement in 1979. In both Butler and Angola, Mrs. Schubert sponsored Future Teachers organizations, wherein she encouraged high school students to explore careers in education. In Angola, she was a Member of the Business and Professional Womenâs Association. Fond of travel, she has toured all 50 United States, nine Canadian provinces, Mexico, the Caribbean, Great Britain, and Europe. An avid reader, she also enjoyed sports, and as a long-time member of Greenhurst Country Club won a nine-hole golf championship in 1962, and recorded a hole-in-one on July 12, 1961.
Mrs. Schubert is preceded in death by her parents, Cleve Henry Grube (1973) and Edith Garnet (Brink) Grube (1979), both of Butler; her husband, Walter William Schubert (1974), formerly of Berea, OH; her daughter-in-law, Dr. Ann Lynn Lopez Schubert (2006) of Chicago, and her former daughter-in-law, Margaret Elaine (Ulrey, Schubert) Shores (1998) of Texas.
Surviving Madeline are her son, Dr. William Henry Schubert, a professor at the University of Illinois in Chicago and Dr. Ming Fang He a professor in Georgia Southern University; grandson, Henry William Lopez Schubert and granddaughter Heidi Ann Lopez Schubert (both of Chicago); granddaughter, Karen Margaret Schubert of Mishawaka, IN; granddaughter Ellen Elaine (Schubert) Clinard, her husband, Kenneth Wesley Clinard, and two great-grandsons, Kevin William Clinard and Alexander Wayne Clinard (all of Houston).
Madelineâs family, friends, and former students deeply appreciate her dignity, humor, generosity, insight, empathy, and interest in their lives, and they will always remember her with admiration and love. The positive influence of a good parent and teacher lives on through many generations. Such is the legacy of Madeline Schubert.
Since 1987, Mrs. Schubert has resided at Wesley Manor in Frankfort, a retirement community of the Methodist Church, where she has served in several leadership positions. Those who may wish to make a donation in memory of Mrs. Schubert may contribute to any of the following: The Good Samaritan Fund at Wesley Manor, the Methodist Childrenâs Home in Lebanon, IN; the St. Matthew United Methodist Church (where she was a member since moving to Frankfort); The University of Illinois Foundation (with notation âfor the Ann Lynn Lopez Schubert Fundâ); or a charity of their choice.
Services will be performed by Rev. Jake Fisher and Chaplin of Wesley Manor Ron Mann, in the Amanda Reed Memorial Chapel at 10:30am on Wednesday March 14, 2012, accompanied by guest pastor Rev. Alvin B. Covell, of the Frankton Christian Church. Genda Funeral Home of Frankfort will handle the arrangements. Mrs. Schubert will be interred beside her husband, parents, and other ancestors at the Butler Cemetery in Butler, IN, on Wednesday March 14, 2012 at 3:30pm with a public graveside service. Visitation at Wesley Manor Amanda Reed Memorial Chapel from 9:30 to 10:30am on Wednesday.
