Neil R. “Big Neil” Johnson, 59, of Frankfort, passed away Thursday, August 28, 2014, at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

He was born May 21, 1955, in Pittsburgh, Penn., to Olof and Phyllis Hawlberg Johnson.  On May 23, 1987, he married Helen Hines; she survives.

Neil graduated from Rich Central High School in Olympia Fields, Ill.  Starting at age 18, he worked as a boilermaker for Chicago Bridge and Iron before retiring at age 55.  Neil then enjoyed driving the past three years for local public transportation.  He was a member of the Hammond 374 Local of Indiana, and NTL Boilermakers.  Neil attended First Church of the Nazarene in Frankfort.  He enjoyed raising his garden, grilling and cooking, playing cribbage, fishing, and trap shooting.  Glugg was a specialty of his.

In addition to his wife, Neil is survived by his father and mother-in-law, Richard and Donna Hines of Frankfort; one son, Neil R. (Charli) Johnson II of Kokomo; daughter, Linnea Johnson of Frankfort; sister, Carla (Joe) Toth of Illinois; one brother, Eric (Nancy) Johnson of Alaska; one nephew, and two nieces.

Visitation for Neil will be held on Wednesday, September 3, 2014, at Genda Funeral Home in Frankfort, from 4:00 – 8:00 p.m.  Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 4, 2014, at the funeral home with Pastor Larry Purvis officiating.  Burial will follow in Bunnell Cemetery in Frankfort.  Online condolences may be directed to www.gendafuneralhome.com.
