Paul L. Black, 97, of Frankfort, passed away Thursday, April 9, 2015, at Wesley Manor.
He was born March 29, 1918, to Orvee W. and Sarah E. Ditmire Black in Cass County, Indiana.
Paul married Carol E. Baldwin on April 23, 1939 in Sharon, Indiana and she passed on January 25, 2006.
Paul graduated from Metea High School in Cass County, in 1937 and graduated from Indiana School of Barber Science in Indianapolis in 1938.
Paul was a long time member of the Sweetser United Methodist Church serving as a member of the Church Board, a trustee, volunteer Church Custodian, treasurer of the Methodist Men, Chairman of the Official Board, on the Missionary Committee, on the Board of Evangelism,Superintendent of Sunday School and Sunday School teacher and head usher. Paul also served Wesley Manor as usher and custodian of the wood shop. He enjoyed wood working as he made over 800 wooden bowls from various woods from all over the world.
Paul was a life member of the Fulton County Historical Society in Rochester; he was a descendant of the Frank Ditmire family whose history is recorded in volume 2 of the Fulton County Folks. Before moving to Frankfort in 1983 he had resided in Fulton County and Sweetser for 42 years.
Paul and Carol were very proud of their son David being named valedictorian of his 1959 Sweetser High School graduating class.
Paul and Carol were instrumental forming the Mark Black Memorial Athletic Award given out yearly to a Senior Athlete at Oak Hill High School. They also started the Vietnam War Memorial at Oak Hill High School in memory of their son, Mark Black who was killed in the Vietnam War.
Paul is survived by two grandsons, Mark R. Black II and David L. Black Jr., both of Tustin, CA; one granddaughter, Sherrie Carlile of Castle Rock, CO; one great-granddaughter, Courtnie Black; and one great-grandson, Brennan Black.
In addition to his parents and his wife Paul was preceded by his sons Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Mark Ryan Black and David L. Black.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2015 at Grant Memorial Park Mausoleum beginning at 12:00 PM until start of service at 1:00 PM with Pastor Mick Wilson officiating. Memorials in Paulâs name may be made to Sweetser Methodist Church or charity of donorâs choice.
