Philip D. Smith

Philip Daniel Smith, 48, of Indianapolis, departed this life into the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ on Sunday evening, January 18, 2015, as a result of a vehicle accident.

Born in Miles City, Montana, on October 7, 1966, Philip was the son of Alfred and LaVon Smith of Flora. Spending some of his teen years in Iowa, Philip moved to Indiana in October of 1986 and attended Purdue University while working as a specialist in security systems. At the time of his death, he was employed by Consolidated Resource Imaging in aerial surveillance technology.

Philip enjoyed singing, hunting, camping, and spending quality time with his son and daughter whom he loved dearly as well as his immediate family and his many nieces and nephews. He was known for his servant’s heart, persistent determination, compassion and care for others, and winsome, friendly, jovial personality which engaged even the most withdrawn. Having received Christ as his personal Savior as a young person, Philip valued the preaching of the Bible and had a desire for others to come to know and believe its eternal truth. He was an active member of Colonial Hills Baptist Church of Indianapolis where he served the Lord in the choir, sound, missions, and ushering ministries.

Philip is survived by his mother, LaVon Smith of Flora; his two children, Wynn and Larissa of Rossville; six sisters, Linda (David) Rousellow (MN), Cheryl (Hans) Stitzinger (PA), Julie (Jeff) Angus (Galveston), Connee  (Rod) Ellsbury (IA), Loretta (John) Schofield (MN), and Darlene (Jason) Pankonin (MN); and one brother, David (Heidi) Smith (PA).

A memorial service for Philip will be held at the Colonial Hills Baptist Church of Indianapolis on Saturday, January 24, at 11:00 a.m. preceded by visitation at 10:00. A private family burial will be held at Maple Lawn Cemetery in Flora.  Memorials may be made to the funeral home to help the family defray costs.  Arrangements are entrusted to Genda Funeral Home Reinke Chapel in Flora.  Condolences may be posted online at www.gendafuneralhome.com.
