Raymond E. “Slim” Hammel, 84, of Mulberry, passed away on Wednesday, April 18, 2018, at St. Elizabeth East in Lafayette, Indiana.
Slim was born January 15, 1934, in Mulberry to Lester D. and Mary Swihart Hammel. On February 22, 1953, he married JoAnne Roberts; she preceded him in death on December 9, 2016.
He attended Mulberry High School where he received his GED. Slim worked at Purdue University for 22 years, and studied there for three years. Prior to that he worked in construction and had been a milk and cheese delivery man.
He was a current member of St. Luke Christian Church where he served as a deacon and was a former member of Trinity Church in Mulberry where he also served as a trustee and deacon. Slim was a 50-year member of the Mulberry Masonic Lodge, member of the NRA, and the Mulberry Conservation Club. In his spare time, he enjoyed woodworking and just working, in general, whether it be as a shade-tree mechanic, plumber, or electrician. He and JoAnne loved to square dance and started the Mulberry Square Dance Club. At one time, Slim was the only person certified by the State of Indiana to inspect the elevators at Purdue University.
Slim is survived by his children, Steve (Janet) Hammel of Colfax, JP (Tina) Hammel of Mulberry, Deborah (Keith) Hartman of Indianapolis, Katherine Townsley of Mulberry, Lori (Gary) Salmons of Mulberry; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by son, Doug, and infant daughter, Sharon; brothers, Paul and George, and sister, Joyce Hague.
Visitation will be on Monday, April 23, 2018, from 5:00 pm - 8:00 p.m. at Genda Funeral Home - Mulberry Chapel. Funeral Services will be on Tuesday, April 24, 2018 at 2:30 p.m. with Pastor Scott Highlander officiating. Burial will follow in Fair Haven Cemetery. Memorials in Slim’s name may be made to the Parkinson Research Foundation, 5969 Cattleridge Blvd., Suite 100, Sarasota, FL 34232 or online at Parkinson Research Foundation or St. Luke Christian Church.
