Richard D. Spurgeon passed away at Homewood Health Campus in Lebanon on March 28, 2023. He was born on April 2, 1930, in Hillisburg, Indiana. He was the son of Otis D. and Florence V. (Reynolds) Spurgeon.
He was a 1948 graduate of Scircleville High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 – 1954 as an airborne radio operator on transport aircraft during the Korean War. He later farmed with his father, was employed at P.R. Mallory Controls in Frankfort, and Delco Electronics in Kokomo where he was a machine repairman. He retired after 30 years of service at Delco.
He was a member of the Frankfort Eagles and the Orbitor Radio Control Modelers Club. He also served as a member of the Hillisburg Volunteer Fire Department.
He married Barbara L. McCoy on December 17, 1960. She preceded him in death on June 4, 2021. He and Barbara had one daughter, Judith E. (Spurgeon) Woodard who preceded them in death. He also was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Janice R. Biery and Nancy Atchley; one brother, Robert A. Spurgeon; and a grandson, Carlos Keanan Joseph Woodard.
He is survived by a granddaughter, Kaniesha Woodard of Indianapolis and a son-in-law, Gary Woodard (Charlotte) of Frankfort, and several nieces and nephews.
He enjoyed listening to country music and playing his bass guitar in local bands. He enjoyed flying and had a Piper J-3 Cub aircraft at the Frankfort airport when it first opened. He also built and flew model airplanes.
Visitation will be held on Monday, April 3, 2023, from 4 pm to 7 pm and on Tuesday, April 4, 2023, from 11 am until the start of the funeral service at noon, all at Day and Genda Funeral Home – Frankfort. Pastor Fred Grenier will officiate. Burial will follow with military rites at the Green Lawn Cemetery in Frankfort. Memorial donations may be made to the American Stroke Association PO Box 840692, Dallas, TX 75284-0692.
