Richard “Dick” R. Crum, 97, Michigantown, passed away Tuesday, November 15, 2022, at his daughter’s house in McCordsville. He was born in Beard on January 27, 1925, to Francis Earl and Bessie Anna (Cox) Crum. He married the love of his life, Doris Ellen Murphy on June 2, 1946. She preceded him in death on March 20, 2005.
Dick was a 1943 graduate of Michigantown High School. He then enlisted in the United States Marines and served during World War II. He was a witness to the raising of the flag at Iwo Jima and was a Purple Heart recipient. After his military service, Dick was a life long farmer. He was a hardworking man and a great steward of the land. He was a member of Hopewell United Methodist Church, a charter member of the Michigantown Lions Club, and a 75-year member of the Order of the Eastern Star and Beard Masonic Lodge 641. He enjoyed playing Euchre and was known for being a generous man.
Dick is survived by his daughters, Rebecca (Robert) Kruger and Janet Balsley; brother, Max Crum; grandchildren, Dr. Angelee (Dr. David) Reiner, Christopher (Jennifer) Kruger, Amanda (Mark) Lucke, Patrick Balsley, Nicholas (Kyle Yorn) Balsley; great grandchildren, Olivia, Grace and Emilia Reiner, CJ, Sasha, and Ali Kruger, Henry and Grant Lucke; dear family friend, Lelia Matus and her daughters and 22 nieces and nephews.
Along with his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, James David Balsley; brothers, Edwin, Wayne and infant Cloyd Crum; sisters, Mary Pickering and Dorothy Beets; parent-in-laws, Lola and Zephnia Newton; sisters-in-law, Nova Crum, Evelyn Crum, Wilma Crum, Betty Crum, and Ellen Murphy; brothers-in-law, Cecil Pickering, Rex Beets and Gerald Murphy, dear family friend, Fernando Matus; three nieces and two nephews; and numerous cousins and friends.
Visitation will be held Saturday, November 19, 2022, from 11am until the time of the service at 2pm at Genda Funeral Home in Frankfort. Burial will follow at Hopewell Cemetery. Military Rites will be performed by the Clinton County Honor Guard. Memorial contributions may be made in Dick’s honor to the Hopewell Cemetery Association.
