Russell D. Tharp, 78, of Kirklin, passed away on Sunday, February 2, 2014, at his home.
He was born September 20, 1935, in Nady, AR, the son of James W. and Maddie Hughes Tharp, Sr. Russell married Judy Hobbs on August 19, 1989; she survives.
Russell attended Gillett High School and received his Bachelors Degree from the University of Denver. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Russell was a self-employed cabinet maker for 30 years and previously worked in the oil fields in Alaska. He enjoyed woodworking and attended Lebanon Wesleyan Church.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Reginald D. (Terri Ann) Tharp, Gregory P. Tharp, and Melanie C. Havlik; four step-children, Jeffrey (Diane) Wilson, Stephen (Shannon) Wilson, Joetta L. Perkinson, and Janetta (Bill) Goforth; four sisters, Jeanette Menard, Annience Shelborn, Shirley R. Abraham, and Martha (Gary) Beecher; four brothers, James (Shirley) Tharp, Burl (Patty) Tharp, Carroll Tharp, and Joseph (Judy) Tharp; four grandchildren; and nine step-grandchildren.
Russell was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Paul Tharp.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 6, 2014, at Genda Funeral Home in Frankfort from 11 a.m. to the start of the funeral service at 1 p.m. Dr. Morris Jones will officiate. Burial will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery in Kirklin with military honors. Memorials may be made in Russellâs name to Gideonâs International.
