Sylvia "Darlene" (Thomas) Carpenter

Sylvia “Darlene” Carpenter, 85, Mulberry, passed away Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at Franciscan East Hospital in Lafayette.  She was born in Crawfordsville on December 29, 1937, to Merle and Dorothy (Stephens) Thomas.  She married Gerald “Jerry” Carpenter, Sr. on November 25, 1954.  He preceded her in death in January of 2018.

Darlene graduated high school from Washington High School in Indianapolis.  She managed Sun-glo and Checkers gas station before she started cleaning houses.  She was a member at Community Christian Church.  Darlene enjoyed participating in the activities put on at the Cottages of Mulberry, gardening flowers, bird watching, playing cards, going for walks, and spending time with her church family.  She was loved by many and loved them in return.  Above all she loved her family and enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren making memories.

Darlene is survived by her children, Gerald “Jerry” Lee (Tammy) Carpenter, Jr., Robin (Gary) Lahrman, Brian (Lydia) Carpenter, and Mark (Carrie) Carpenter; grandchildren, Charity (Mike) Woodard, Brooke (Aaron Weaver) Sanders, Derrick (Sonya) Lahrman, Morgan (Brad) Smith, and Jennifer Riccus; ten great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren with one on the way; and sisters-in-law Kay Birden, Susie (Dave) Bibler.

Along with her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Ronald Thomas, brother-in-law, William Carpenter; and sister-in-law, June (Benton) Kemp.

Visitation will be held, Tuesday, October 17, 2023, from 10am until the time of the service at 12pm at Day & Genda Funeral Home ~ Mulberry Chapel.  Pastor Mike Whitacre will officiate.  Burial will follow at Green Lawn Cemetery in Frankfort.  Memorial contributions may be made to the Stone Soup Food Pantry and Community Christian Church.  Messages of condolence may be left at www.dayandgenda.com.
