Husband, Father, Patriot: Walter R. Freels, 87, of Rantoul, Ill., died on Monday, December 24, 2012, at home with his family.
He was born September 1, 1925, in Oliver Springs, Tenn., the son of Jess and Nellie Freels.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barbara (ne: Burkhalter), his daughter Belinda Fletcher, sons David and Michael Freels, and three grandchildren, Russell, Karly, and Christian Freels. He is also survived by his sister Callie Harrison of Frankfort, IN and his brother Bill Freels of Lafayette, IN.
Walter served with distinction in the US Army from 1941 to 1945 in the European Theater of conflict and was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, and Combat Infantry Badge, among other honors. Following the end of the war he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served with pride and integrity as a Security Policeman before completing his military service to his nation and retiring in 1968. Following his retirement from active duty in the Air Force he worked for the Rantoul City School System and the Army and Air Force Exchange Service.
He is preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, three sisters, and his grandson, Jackson Fletcher.
Memorial and interment service will be at the Green Lawn Cemetery Peace Garden Mausoleum in Frankfort, IN (496 West County Road 200 South) at 11:00 AM Eastern Daylight Time on Monday, December 31, 2012.
