Warren A. Messick III

Warren A. Messick III, 77, of Fort Collins, Colorado, and formerly of Rossville, passed away Wednesday, August 21, 2013, at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins.

He was born May 20, 1936, in Lafayette, Indiana, the son of Warren A. Jr. and Harriette L. Campbell Messick.  Warren was married to Wanda Ford until 1989 and together had 3 sons. Warren married the former Virginia Cameron on October 5, 1990; she preceded him in death in 2008.

Warren served in the United States Navy from 1954 until his retirement in 1973, reaching the rank of Gunner’s Mate (Missiles) Senior Chief Petty Officer (GMCS).  Warren earned the Good Conduct Medal with 3 bronze stars, National Defense Service Medal with bronze star, Vietnam Service Medal with 4 bronze stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Sharpshooter Pistol Award, Navy Unit Commendation, China Service Medal and Navy Expeditionary Medal. His tours of duty included service on three destroyers and two cruisers, the USS Floyd B. Parks, the USS Mansfield, the USS Maddox, the USS Topeka and the USS Providence. He later worked in the construction industry for 17 years and at Purdue University in the Physics Department for the following 11 years.  

Surviving Warren are his sons, Warren A. Messick IV of Barstow, CA, Wesley B. Messick of Fort Collins, CO, and Wyndal T. Messick of Barstow, CA; step-son, Douglass Steffy of Orlando, FL; step-daughter, Susan Steffy of Rossville; sisters, Kareon Cook and Patricia Poulin, both of Delphi; brothers, Ernie Messick and Michael Messick both of West Lebanon, and Rick Messick of Delphi; six grandchildren, three step grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Warren is preceded in death by his parents, and one sister, Sharon K. Tharp.

A graveside memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 14, 2013, in Rossville Cemetery with Fr. Bradley Pace officiating.  Inurnment will follow in the cemetery.  Memorials in Warren’s name may be made to American Cancer Society.  On-line condolences may be directed to www.gendafuneralhome.com.
